and a colouring book in disguise.
Los Tecolotes is a Mexican animated series for children produced for Claro Video. The brief was to design a physical box set that would delight kids as much as the show itself, something that felt like a toy as much as packaging.
A children’s box set needs to earn its place on a shelf. It has to be immediately appealing to kids, practical for parents, and feel like an extension of the show’s world, not just a container for a disc. The design had to work as packaging, as a collectible, and as something a child would want to keep.
The box was designed in the shape of a house, a home for the Tecolotes characters, giving the packaging its own narrative logic. The key creative decision was to keep the illustration to a single ink, turning the entire outer surface into a colouring book. That meant children could personalise their own copy, making each box set unique and extending the life of the product well beyond a single viewing. Simple, playful, and clever, exactly like the show.
The result
A complete box set delivered as print-ready masters and print plans across the house-shaped outer packaging, CD disc artwork, interior booklet with character guide, origami activity, and maze, all prepared for physical production in partnership with Sanborns.
Built in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
